Why Do We Have to Complete Psychosocial Consultation Sessions to Build Our Family?
Psychosocial consultation sessions for all parties involved in the donor matching process are required by many fertility clinics that follow ASRM guidelines.
These sessions are not intended to determine whether intended parents are “fit” to become parents. Rather, they are educational and consultative in nature, with the goal of helping participants thoughtfully consider the emotional, relational, and practical aspects of donor conception.
The consultation provides an opportunity to explore expectations, boundaries, communication styles, motivations, and areas that may benefit from further discussion before participants become more deeply invested through in-person meetings, family introductions, legal agreements, or medical procedures.
For donors, the consultation also serves as an assessment of their readiness to participate in donor conception and their understanding of the long-term implications of their decision. Concerns identified during the consultation may result in recommendations for additional discussion, education, or, in some cases, may impact whether a donor is approved to move forward.
Common topics explored include:
-
-
Expectations regarding future contact and communication
-
Boundaries and roles within the donor relationship
-
How participants may navigate changes over time
-
Feelings and assumptions about the donor’s place in the child’s life
-
How donor conception may be discussed with a child throughout development
-
The potential perspectives, questions, and needs of a future donor-conceived person
-
Areas of agreement, difference, or uncertainty that may benefit from further discussion
-
Many matching programs include an initial video meeting during the selection process. This meeting serves a different purpose than the psychosocial consultation. The video meeting allows participants to determine whether they would like to continue exploring a potential match. The psychosocial consultation occurs after a potential match has been identified and provides a structured opportunity to explore the relationship more deeply before moving forward.
The goal is not to create a perfect plan, but to support informed decision-making, open communication, and a foundation of relational readiness that prioritizes the long-term well-being of everyone involved, including the future child.

Donor Session (No Objective Testing)
This session is a suitability screening for known donation according to ASRM guidelines. In addition, donors explore the long-term implications and emotional impact of donation. A written report is included and will be sent directly to the clinic of your choice.
Please note: This session does not include any objective psychological testing (e.g., PAI Plus or MMPI-2). If your clinic requires testing, please book the Donor Session with Objective Testing and refer to the associated fee for that service. If additional follow up sessions are needed for donors, my prorated hourly fee will be applied.
Donor Session with Objective Testing
Before donating gametes, it’s essential to meet with a licensed professional who can help you explore the long-term psychological and social implications of donation, as well as determine if known donation is the right fit for you. This session follows a standardized evaluation process used by most clinics and agencies. Includes a clinical interview and the PAI (Personality Assessment Inventory)-a proctored psychological test is administered following the interview.
The provider’s role is limited to gathering information and preparing the required report. Because this is not a therapeutic relationship, individualized feedback, recommendations, or ongoing support are not provided.
